Abstract

Recent advances in improving silage quality using biological products require the selection of unique strains of microorganisms for specific feeds; the addition of lactic acid bacteria that secrete enzymes that break down lignocellulose; the production of useful organic acids and other metabolites that inhibit microorganisms that spoil feed under aerobic conditions.

Silage feed additive of microbiological origin is a live microorganism used to improve silage fermentation and aerobic stability. Interestingly, some researchers, using lactic acid bacteria as silage inoculants in experiments, reported improved animal productivity without finding improvement in the quality of the silage itself. The mechanism of this type of effect is explained by them as a direct effect of the introduced microorganisms that survived the ensiling process on the digestive system of cattle, entering the rumen along with feed. Such microorganisms have antimicrobial and antifungal activity, produce substances characterized by antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, detoxifying properties.

Preservation of nutritional value and increase in feed conversion is the goal of preserving fresh forage crops or other types of biomass for future use. Silage quality is improved by the addition of various inoculants that are effective during preservation and storage, improving fermentation characteristics, promoting beneficial microbial diversity and preventing the growth and development of pathogenic microorganisms. Nevertheless, the establishment of a safety profile of the biological product used is of paramount importance, including the establishment of the absence of side effects as a result of long-term use.

The article presents the results of studying the parameters of subchronic toxicity of silage feed additive. The studies were conducted on non-linear white rats. In the experiment, it was found that the feed additive in dosages of 1/10, 1/20 and 1/50 of the maximum administered in an acute experiment does not cause symptoms of intoxication and death in animals. There is a positive trend in total protein, shaped blood elements, hemoglobin, and growth intensity in rats of the experimental groups. The absence of pathoanatomic changes of internal organs in all experimental animals was noted. The research results indicate that the tested silage feed additive is safe and has no signs of toxicity.
